Aquinas College – Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center

Project Details

A grand opening in November marked the completion of the renovation of the former Fieldhouse, considered Phase I of the Sports & Fitness Center project. The renovated facility is now named after Peter Sturrus, one of the major donors for the project. The renovation project underwent extensive programming, design, and preconstruction work before construction actually began in 2009.

Though adequate for the athletic programs of the 1960’s, Aquinas College’s Fieldhouse was outdated. It now features upgraded competition areas in the arena, facilities for a new fitness center, and much-needed classroom space for Aquinas College’s Athletic Training program. The renovation nearly doubled the usable square footage, all within the building’s existing footprint.

The new Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center is expected to achieve LEED certification. The building systems were designed to not only meet but exceed the energy savings of comparable buildings by 46 percent. The cooling and refrigeration systems were designed to support early compliance with the Montreal Protocol while minimizing the direct contribution the building has on global warming. In addition, more than 95 percent of the unused materials needed for this building were diverted from the landfill and rerouted to be turned into new products.
