Summary
Project Details
This eight-story, 108,000 sq. ft. building has a prominent position in the history of Grand Rapids. Known as the Steketee’s Building, this building served the retail needs of Grand Rapids for many years. With the exit of retailers from the downtown area, this large property sat empty for many years. The building was comprised of three buildings - one 8-story concrete, of which 5 stories sat vacant for years, one 4-story steel, and one 1800’s-era wood structure in the back. Rockford judged the building sound and combined the three structures, removing walls when necessary to meet layout needs for a new tenant.
The building is currently home to anchor tenant, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, which made the decision to move from a suburban office environment to become part of the downtown neighborhood. This building is also home to Schuler Books & Music and the downtown Grand Rapids Independent Bank branch office.
“Working with Rockford Construction has been an enlightening experience. I appreciate the company’s commitment to fulfill its promises as well as its commitment to the renaissance that’s taking place in the City of Grand Rapids. I’d say Rockford’s employees demonstrate a good deal of integrity, their principles resonate with ours at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and best of all—they are very easy to work with.”
Dale Robertson | Former Vice President West MI Region | Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
